LE CLÉ USB REMPLACE LE TICKET DE BUS À MONTPELLIER
.

PEDESTRIAN AREAS ON BROADWAY IN TIMES SQUARE
WILL BE MADE PERMANENT
.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today (February 11, 2010) announced that the Green Light for Midtown pilot initiative to improve traffic and safety at Times and Herald Squares will be made permanent.

On Memorial Day 2009, NYCDOT began implementation of the Green Light for Midtown project. The work created new pedestrian areas on Broadway in Times Square (47th to 42nd Streets) and Herald Square (35th to 33rd Streets). Extensive safety improvements were also made along the Broadway corridor between Columbus Circle and Madison Square.
.

The project was based on a feasibility analysis that indicated it would improve traffic flow on 6th and 7th Avenue and improve traffic safety along Broadway. After implementing Green Light for Midtown as a pilot, NYCDOT collected extensive transportation data to monitor the project and collected these photos along the way.

Pilot project improved speeds by seven percent in West Midtown and dramatic increases in pedestrian and motorist safety. [ More ]

HOLDING ON TO CYCLIST IN COPENHAGEN
.
Pling. All of sudden this little bicycle-friendly detail showed up on the urban landscape in Copenhagen one day. I'm quite sure that very few people have noticed it, except for the people who roll up next to it. Which is the point, really.

I'm talking about the railings that the man is holding onto and resting his foot on. It's located on a little traffic island on which cyclists who are heading straight on wait. The City of Copenhagen has implemented this double railing simply as a convenience for the cyclists who stop here. A high railing to grasp with your hand and a foot railing for putting your foot up, if that's what you fancy doing. Either way you can also use the railing to push off when the light changes.
.

The foot rest reads: "Hi, cyclist! Rest your foot here... and thank you for cycling in the city." [ More ]

Coordonnées: Syndicat PROMU, rue Jules Guesde 92300 Levallois Perret.

BUS STOP OF THE FUTURE
.

Imagine if your local bus stop allowed you to check your e-mail, share community information on a digital message board or monitor the local air quality? And perhaps best of all, what if it could tell you the exact location of that bus that you're waiting for? MIT architects and engineers just unveiled a design for such a bus stop, at the Genio Fiorentino festival in Florence, Italy.

Called EyeStop and developed by the MIT SENSEable City Lab, it takes the tedium out of waiting for the bus and showcases the potential of next-generation urban transportation design.

The EyeStop is partially covered with touch-sensitive e-INK and screens, and features state-of-the art sensing technologies and a variety of interactive services. Riders can plan a bus trip on an interactive map, surf the Web, monitor their real-time exposure to pollutants and use their mobile devices as an interface with the bus shelter. They can also post ads and community announcements to an electronic bulletin board at the bus stop.

In addition to displaying information, the bus stop also acts as an active environmental sensing node, powering itself through sunlight and collecting real-time information about the surrounding environment.

Unlike the typical mass-produced bus stop, EyeStop is designed to fit the physical characteristics of its surroundings. A computer program generates a unique design for each bus stop, providing both optimal sheltering for users and maximum sunlight exposure for power generation. Simple materials like steel, glass and gray local stone ("pietra serena," as it is called locally), together with its minimalist design, will help the EyeStop blend into the historic urban fabric of Florence, or wherever else it might be deployed.

EyeStop was developed at the SENSEable City Laboratory by Giovanni de Niederhausern, Shaocong Zhou, Assaf Biderman and Carlo Ratti, in collaboration with the Province of Florence and the local public transportation authority ATAF.

THE NYC PLAZA PROGRAM
.

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) presents the NYC Plaza Program. Through this new initiative, DOT will work with community partners to create neighborhood plazas throughout the City. We will do this by transforming underused streets into vibrant, social public spaces. This program is a key part of the City’s effort to ensure that all New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of quality open space.

SEGWAY'S P.U.M.A. PROTOTIPE
.

Think of it as a digital solution to an analog problem. Segway’s P.U.M.A. (Personal Urban Mobility & Accessibility) prototype represents the shift that’s needed for the future of transportation. It values less over more; taking up less space, using less energy, produced more efficiently with fewer parts, creating fewer emissions during production and operation, all while offering more enjoyment, productivity, and connectivity.

Take a test drive and you quickly understand that this is something completely different. The elegance and maneuverability of dynamic stabilization combined with proven battery, sensing, and controls technologies come together to solve real transportation challenges. This prototype represents only the first step of what’s possible in a technology collaboration between Segway and General Motors.

CITIES: 'LIVING SPACE'
by Brice Tual is a journey through the evolution of the street furniture in France
.
Street furniture is the term for all the different elements that make up public amenities including benches and chairs, drinking fountains, public toilets, telephone boxes, bus shelters, billboards, street lighting, and children’s play areas. They all form part of the services offered to city-dwellers to make their lives more comfortable.

It must be carefully planned at the design stage and carefully managed on a day-to-day basis. It contributes to a town’s identity and plays a role in town planning. Councils sometimes even get into "arms races" to show which of them offers its inhabitants the most harmonious and practical living space. Each new addition should be meticulously studied so as to ensure that amenities are user-friendly and that they meet requirements in terms of safety and accessibility.

In this context, designers, architects and manufacturers design urban amenities to aid city-dwellers in their everyday lives, while also encouraging them to get to know each other, to get information and to look at architectural space in a different way.
.

As it is subjected to all kinds of wear and tear, street furniture has to be built to last, robust and secure. It has to have finishes and coatings suited to various different constraints including anti-sticker, anti-graffiti and anti-bacterial coatings. As in most other sectors, these amenities now have to take account of environmental concerns. Eco-design is about considering a product’s entire lifecycle, from the extraction of the raw materials to the end of its life. [ More ] [ Suivre ]

INVISIBLE STREETLIGHT
by Jongoh Lee
.

The leaves play the role of making "Invisible Streetlight" invisible without damaging the nature as much as possible. During daytime, the leaves are temporarily invisible mingled with real leaves of a tree. At night, the leaf-shaped lightings come to life with the help of luminance sensor.
